A group of U.S. senators have asked Meta for documents to explain how much it knew about the potential mental health impacts of Facebook and Instagram on users.
The bipartisan group, who are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking Meta to “provide documents related to senior executives’ knowledge of the mental and physical health harms associated with its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram,” according to a statement on Wednesday.
Meta has until Nov. 30 to submit the documents, Reuters reported.
The request of the lawmakers ramps up the pressure on Meta, which has just been told it must face a blockbuster legal challenge brought by dozens of states, school districts and individuals that together allege the company purposefully makes its apps addictive to young people and has knowingly affected the mental health of American teenagers and children.
Meta did not respond to The Messenger’s request for comment.
