Texas basketball recruiting: Rodney Terry raves about early signees headlined by five-star Tre Johnson

Following basketball’s early signing day, Texas head coach Rodney Terry called five-star guard Tre Johnson one of the best he’s seen at the position in the state of Texas, comparing his work ethic to Texas legend Phoenix Suns’ superstar Kevin Durant. Texas has the No. 4 ranked 2024 class in the nation. Cam Scott and Nicolas Codie are the other signees and also drew praise from their future head coach.

“I’ve been recruiting the state of Texas for a long time, 12 years here at Texas and Tre Johnson is one of the best guards I’ve seen in the state of Texas,” Terry said after Texas beat Rice Wednesday evening. “That’s pretty lofty in terms of some of the guys we were able to get while I was here with the previous tenure, but he’s a guy that I’ve seen play at a high level from the very start of his recruitment. Sophomore year, I saw him play against elite-level guys in Cason Wallace and guys that are top 10 (NBA Draft) picks that are elite defensive players. And just give those guys almost 40 points in games.

“I mean he’s just an elite guy. Some guys are wired to score, he’s wired to score. But I think he also has a chance to be a really good two-way player. He has a chance to a really good defender as well. He’s one of the elite players to come out of Texas in terms of scoring the basketball that I’ve seen in my 27 years of recruiting the state of Texas. He’s elite. He has next-level ability and he’s a gym rat. He’s one of those throwback guys like Kevin Durant, that loves being in the gym.”

Johnson is a product of Dallas Link Academy. He has offers from several top programs, such as Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Last month, 247Sports’ recruiting expert Adam Finklestein praised Johnson’s scoring ability and mapped out how he can become more efficient.

“One of the very best scorers in the national class, Tre Johnson is a threat at different levels and just has a knack for putting the ball in the basket,” Finklestein said, as featured on Johnson’s player profile. “He’s most effective when he’s able to operate in space, whether that be in the open floor or attacking a close-out. He’s a dangerous shooter off the dribble and while he can make tough threes, his favorite spots are in the mid-range area. He can pull-up over top of contesting defenders, step-back to create some space, and even bring smaller defenders into the mid-post and operate with his back to the basket.

“… Overall, he’s a potent scorer in the backcourt with size and length that translates, but he tends to rely on making tough shots,” As he learns to become more efficient offensively, and competitive defensively, his game should continue to go to new levels.

Four-star forward Nicolas Codie and four-star guard Cam Scott are players that Terry thinks could make an immediate impact as well as Texas transitions to the SEC in 2024.

“I’m excited about Nic Cody, has a high ceiling as well. Late bloomer, has a chance to be a really good player as well and has a chance to be an impact player. Cam Scott, same thing. NBA athleticism, a guy too that has a chance. Can score the ball for us, big time athlete. NBA size. Three really good young players that have a chance to be really good players in Longhorn uniforms for us. We’re excited about those guys. Great starting point for us and (give the staff) a lot of kudos for that they were able to do in the recruiting process. Brandon (Chappell) did a great job with Nicolas Codie, Frank (Haith) did an incredible job with Trey and Ty Larson from a non-recruiting position did a great job with Cam Scott, developing a great relationship. Our staff did a great job in terms of really developing relationships and identifying guys that we think can come in here and be really good players for us next season.”
