9-year-old girl in critical condition, shot while in car driving near interstate in North Memphis, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 9-year-old girl was seriously injured after being shot inside a car while her mother was driving near an interstate in North Memphis on Thursday night, police said.

Police said the family did not know the suspect who fired the shot.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers responded just after 7 p.m. to Memphis Fire Station No. 19, where a juvenile shooting victim had arrived.

The child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition, MPD said.

Police said that the mother was driving near an interstate with her child in the car when a white Infiniti pulled up next to the family and fired shots. The shooting is believed to have happened in the area of 2200 block of Chelsea Avenue.

Police said the Infiniti left the scene and headed north on North Hollywood Street.

A family member of the victim told FOX13 that it is “not looking good” for the 9-year-old girl and that she sustained “multiple” gunshot wounds.

FOX13 spotted a red car still in at the scene.

An MPD spokesman appeared to be angry while talking to the media about another shooting involving a child.

“It’s disgusting,” Memphis Police Sgt. Louis Brownlee said. “This is cowardice to aimlessly shoot into a vehicle and strike a kid.”

“It’s cowardice,” he said again. “Be a man. Solve your problem with your words. Talk it out. Don’t resort to gun violence.”
