The Shows: That was the first Latin American Fashion Awards


The Latin American Fashion Awards, the first edition of the fashion event founded by the two bona fide Latin American fashion legends by the two bona fide Latin American fashion legends Constanza Etro and Silvia Argüello, took place in Altos de Chavon, La Romana, in the Dominican Republic, at the beginning of November.

This new biennial fashion and culture project wants to celebrate the best Latin American fashion talents in the world and provide a development ecosystem for their growth. Its mission is to honor the region’s heritage, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and bolster the future of the most outstanding Latin American Talents, helping to shape the fashion industry.

Strong support for the event came from local partners, including Alyon, Grupo Rizek and Ron Barcelò along with international players including Fashion Film Festival Milano, Camera Nazionale Delòla Moda Italiana,  White Show Milano, CFDA (the Council of fashion Designers of America) and Farfetch.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Leslie Grace, the renowned actress and singer of Dominican roots, and Iván de Pineda, the Argentine-Spanish international fashion model, film actor and TV host. 

Top local and international industry members, celebrities, designers and socialites joined the celebration of Latin American fashion Tokischa, Petra Nemcova, Valentina Ferrer, Dascha Polanco, Candela Pelizza, Kiko El Crazy, Jenny Lopez, DJ Pope, as well as the finalists, including Stella Jean, Willy Chavarría, Luar, Elena Velez, the founders of Agua Bendita, Karoline Vitto, the founders of Àcheval, Lineisy Montero, Daniela Villegas, Camila Coutinho, Camila Falquez, Devyn Garcia and Hiandra Martinez, among others.

A prestigious international jury, presided over by designer Haider Ackermann, presented some of the awards in the 14 categories while providing the audience with insights into what makes Latin American talent stand out in the world for their identity and the current challenges they are ready to face. 

Among other personalities participating were journalists, industry icons and celebrities, including fashion editor and influencer Anna Dello Russo; supermodel, actor and activist Indya Moore; creative director and sustainability expert Kean Etro, and journalist and talent scout Sara Sozzani Maino.

Among the winners of the awards, they named “Latin Fashion Icon of the Year” J Balvin, a Colombian-born global superstar who also held a performance during the evening.

They also named Willy Chavarría (Mexico) as Designer of the Year. Raúl López (Dominican Republic) won the Brand of the Year Award. Winning the Emerging Designer of the Year recognisemnet was Karoline Vitto (Brazil). The Artisanal Project of the Year was won by Verdi (Colombia), and responsible project of the year was won by Desserto (Mexico) and Ecocitex (Chile).
