Chris Stapleton, The Stones and more: Here are 4 albums you’ll want to listen to this month

Soulful blues, a country superstar and a surprise comeback from some old hands: Here are four albums you’ll want to listen to this month.

Robert Finley — “Black Bayou”

Hailing from the small north Louisiana town of Bernice, about half an hour north of Ruston, Finley has had a late career surge thanks to Black Key Dan Auerbach and his Easy Eye Sound label.

“Black Bayou” is his third album with Auerbach and it’s a treat, an irresistible mix of gritty blues and funky, raw soul that never flags.

Rhiannon Giddens — “You’re the One”

Giddens is one of those people who, to cop a line from the Faces, can dance, sing or anything. The multitalented artist has dabbled in writing and acting, and even won a Pulitzer Prize for her opera “Omar” earlier in the year.

On “You’re the One,” she adeptly leaps between genres, putting together a collection that pulls from pop and soul but often hews close to her folk roots. Tasteful banjo-flavored pop? Yes please.

The Rolling Stones — “Hackney Diamonds”

You’d be forgiven for not expecting much from “Hackney Diamonds,” the Stones’ first album of original material since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.”

And yet, even (mostly) without Charlie Watts, or Darryl Jones for that matter, “Hackney Diamonds” is a much better album than it has a right to be. The riffs are strong, the tunes are catchy, and even though some of Mick Jagger’s lyrics are a touch clunky, it smacks of classic, swaggering Stones.

Their best since “Tattoo You”? Probably so.

Chris Stapleton — “Higher”

Eight-time Grammy winner Chris Stapleton, a triple threat who’s an excellent guitarist, singer and songwriter, rarely puts a foot wrong these days.

So it goes with “Higher.” Showcasing Stapleton’s strengths in a warm setting, there’s much gentle country soul on display, though things do rock when the occasion suits. As solid as we’ve come to expect.
