Thanksgiving travel kicks off with heavy numbers at Pittsburgh International
LEAVING TOWN. THE DEPARTURE CURB HERE AT PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE GETTING THE BIG SENDOFF FOR THEIR EARLY HOLIDAY TRAVEL. BUT THEY’RE PRETTY SURPRISED ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO SEE ONCE THEY GET INSIDE AWAY FOR THE HOLIDAYS. WARM SEND OFFS AND THE ANTICIPATION OF BEING WITH FAMILY. BUT SHE AND OTHER TRAVELERS ARE STUNNED WHEN THEY REACHED THE LINE TO GET THROUGH THE SECURITY CHECKPOINT. IT’S LONG. IT BEGINS IN THE PEOPLE MOVER CORRIDOR AND STRETCHES A NICE LONG DISTANCE. A LOT OF FOLKS WERE CAUGHT OFF GUARD. THERE’S A WHOLE CURVY LINE GOING AROUND THIS WHOLE PLACE, BUT IT’S OKAY. YOU KNOW, YOU KIND OF EXPECT IT. IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON TRAVEL ESTIMATES FROM THE TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION PLACED 17,000 PEOPLE TRAVELING FROM PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL TODAY. IT’S ONLY THE FIRST WAVE OF TRAVELERS FOR THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY TRAVEL RUSH. ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY YOU’RE TRAVELING TODAY TO GET AHEAD OF THE TRAFFIC, WE THOUGHT. BUT THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE HAD NO IDEA THE LINE WOULD BE THIS LONG. NO, NOT AT ALL. DID YOU ANTICIPATE IT BEING THIS LONG OF A LINE? NO, NOT AT ALL. VERY SURPRISED AT THE LINE. Friday marked the beginning of the 12-day Thanksgiving holiday travel period, and local travelers turned out in large numbers at Pittsburgh International.The Transportation Security Administration estimates that 30 million people across the country will fly to their destinations between Nov. 17 and Nov. 28. On Friday, TSA estimates 17,000 people were screened in Pittsburgh.Next week is traditionally called the busiest travel week of the year, with the day before Thanksgiving bringing a heavy load of travelers by car, plane and rail.
