Venice lights up with Murano glass for Christmas

(ANSA) – ROME, NOV 18 – Murano glass is to meet contemporary
art in Venice this festive season with ‘Murano Illuminates the
World’, a project bringing original lighting to Piazza San Marco
for the first time.

From November 24, 2023 to February 29, 2024, twelve original
chandeliers designed by as many internationally renowned artists
and made by nine Murano furnaces are to light up every evening
to transform the iconic square into the setting for a truly
unique public art intervention.

“Glass is almost a contradiction: it is cold, but it needs a lot
of warmth to be produced,” said Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro.

“It is a natural and recyclable material that has found its home
in Murano and will have an exceptional showcase in Piazza san
Marco, one that focuses on the excellence of our craftsmanship
and the innovation of our traditions,” he continued.

The project ‘Murano Illuminates the world’ is a project of The
Venice Glass Week and Venice City Council. (ANSA).
