Women’s Basketball Takes Home Opener over Montclair State – Stevens Institute of Technology Athletics


HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 18, 2023) – Junior Lucy Alberici scored 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added five assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team defeated Montclair State 65-59 Saturday afternoon inside Canavan Arena.

The Ducks (4-1) win in their first game of the season inside Canavan Arena. Stevens has now won three straight over the Red Hawks after losing the previous nine in the series. Montclair State drops to 1-3.

Alberici and senior Elissa Nsenkyire hit back-to-back threes for the Ducks to open the game, giving them a 6-2 advantage. At the 4:40 mark, sophomore Leyla Castro made a fastbreak jumped to give the Ducks a six point lead. Stevens would lead 17-9 after one. In the second frame, the Ducks were able to get out to a double-digit advantage after Castro and Alberici hit back-to-back shots to go up 23-11. With 3:15 on the clock, sophomore Isabella Duval banged home a three to give the Ducks a 15-point advantage, their largest in the game. Montclair State hit a jumper at the halftime buzzer to trim the deficit as the Ducks held a 31-20 lead at the break.

The Red Hawks hit a three to open the half to immediately get back to within single-digits. In a span of 37 seconds, first-year Kay Decker and Alberici each made jump shots that got their lead back to double figures. First-year Paige Gorczyca converted an and-one with 5:07 to go in the third. Montclair State got back into the game late in the frame as the Ducks led by only six entering the fourth. The Red Hawks would continue their run in the fourth, getting within one of the Ducks. Stevens used an 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter to regain their advantage and go up nine. Stevens would make enough free throws late as the Ducks sealed the victory over Montclair State.

Top Performers

  • Alberici matched her season-high in points with 15. She also tallied a career-high nine boards.
  • Sophomore Dorothy Loffredo scored eight points and added seven rebounds.
  • Decker scored nine points and had nine rebounds.
  • 11 Ducks saw game action.
  • Stevens shot 31.9 percent (22-69) from the field and 21.4 percent (3-14) from three. The Ducks also shot 66.7 percent (18-27) from the line.

The Opponent

  • Megan Duffy led Montclair State in points (18), rebounds (8), assists (3), and steals (3).
  • Shannon Hughes and Isabella Orlando each scored 13 points.
  • Kendall Hodges added seven points.
  • Montclair State shot 35.1 percent (20-57) from the field and 38.9 percent (7-18) from three. They also went 12-16 from the free throw line (75.0%).
