A 9-year-old boy is dead and his father injured after being struck by a car while waiting on the sidewalk to cross the street on Nov. 11.
Chandler Police say two cars collided when one of them tried to make a left-hand turn at the intersection of Ray Road and Coronado Street around 10:30 that morning.
The collision sent one of the cars onto the sidewalk, where it struck three pedestrians. Police did not identify the victims, but a GoFundMe page set up to support the family named them as Aaron Peterson, and his son Ilai (pronounced Eli).
Both were taken to the hospital where Ilai died.
“Ilai Petersen (pronounced Eli) was a very happy and smart kid,” family friend Andrew Villa wrote on the GoFundMe Page. The page had asked for $20,000 to cover medical and funeral expenses. As for the morning of Nov. 14, more than $41,000 had been raised.
“He touched so many lives with his smile and kind heart,” it continued.
“He loved surfing, swimming, fishing, being outdoors and playing with friends. He was a gentle and loving soul. He loved to cuddle his family and tell them how much he loved them and would always say, “I love you more.”
He loved eating sushi and Cholula sauce on pretty much everything.”
Police said there was no initial indication that either driver was impaired. The third pedestrian who was struck did not need treatment.
There was no response to a request for a statement from the family made to Villa through the GoFundMe page.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
