Rochester gun shop owner emphasizes hunting safety and state regulations

Rochester, N.Y. — The Department of Environmental Conservation oversees the rules and requirements for hunting in the state.

Hunters must go through a safety course and eventually get a license before they are allowed to hunt.

Christopher Martello has become familiar with the state’s rules and safety precautions for hunting through his role as owner of a gun shop.

Some include limiting the number of bullets allowed in guns based on the game being hunted and wearing bright clothing.

“Once that round is fired, you can’t put it back in,” said Christopher Martello, CEO, Ikkin Firearms.

“So, always keep the weapon on safe. Point it in the direction of the animal, but before you pull the trigger, look beyond the animal because that round is going to keep right on going.”

Martello says hunters should make sure the safety mechanism of their gun is on before firing.
