New York State DEC holds hearing on Norlite waste plant’s handling of hazardous materials

State and federal laws were changed more than three years ago, requiring Norlite to treat waste ash as a hazardous material.

Local group “Lights Out Norlite” has been fighting for the waste plant to be shut down, saying it’s not sending the waste to landfills.

The group says that Norlite is storing it in uncovered piles instead, polluting water and soil, and having it blow in the air.
