For the past three years, Carl and Penny Moyer (owners of The Karl Auto Group) have graciously opened their home for a Christmas light drive through the weekend after Thanksgiving, and they will continue this tradition again this weekend on Nov. 25 from 6-8 p.m.
This, now annual tradition, started during COVID as a way to bring the community and employees together and give local kids a way to see Santa when there wasn’t a way to do so.
Carl Moyer decided in 2020, during COVID, to light up his entire 19 acre property with Christmas lights and displays to bring some holiday cheer in a time when we needed it most. From there he wanted to find a way to bring the community together, to provide holiday spirit and to allow many of the kids to get an opportunity to see Santa. Even though we still had to social distance, Carl found a way to hold this event and allow kids and families to take pictures with Santa and download them to save and use.
This event allowed families to drive through the property, get a special glimpse into his personal collection of cars all while listening to Christmas music, receiving cookies, hot chocolate and capped with an opportunity to get a family photo with Santa.
Four years later this event has become a family tradition that so many in the Ankeny, Iowa community look forward to each year with new light displays to see to kick off their holiday season. This event is one that Carl and Penny cherish, look forward too and enjoy being able to give back in one more way to the community that has helped their company, The Karl Auto Group, continue to flourish for almost 45 years. 2022 was the biggest event yet, with over 250 vehicles of families through the display in one evening.
The Moyers can’t wait to spread holiday cheer for many years to come, add new displays, ideas, and keep a tradition alive that started when the community, the kids and everyone needed it the most.
