Joe Espy had 19 points and four rebounds for the UC Santa Cruz men’s basketball team, but the Banana Slugs suffered an 80-71 loss to Menlo at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Tuesday.
Zino Okah had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists for UCSC. Ian McCloskey had 11 points and three rebounds, and Zach Granberry had eight points and four rebounds.
Menlo held a slim rebounding advantage (37-34).
The Oaks were fouled often and made 28 of 34 attempts from the free throw line often. UCSC made 16 of 20 attempts.
Landon Seaman had 26 points and nine rebounds for Menlo (8-1), which led 39-31 at the half. Braydon Luli had 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Kaito Williams had 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
UCSC (3-3) plays at Lewis & Clark (1-2) in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Oaks play Nov. 29 at Santa Clara (5-0), which counts sophomore guard Malachi Douyon out of Pacific Collegiate School among its players. St. Francis alum Will Burkett is in his third season as the Broncos’ director of operations.
NBA G League
Santa Cruz 140, at Salt Lake City 126: The Warriors rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Stars and remain unbeaten in Showcase Cup play Tuesday at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City.
Forward Gui Santos, on assignment from Golden State, led the Warriors (5-0) with 27 points and added nine rebounds and four assists. Two-way guard Lester Quinones added 25 points and eight rebounds.
Four Warriors players finished with double-doubles. Guard Donovan Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and two-way center Usman Garuba had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Kendric Davis posted 13 points and 12 assists, and center Jayce Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Forward Brice Sensabaugh, on assignment from the Utah Jazz, led the Stars with 28 points, six rebounds and six assists. Forward Taylor Hendricks, also on assignment, had 22 points and seven rebounds, and two-way guard Johnny Juzang scored 21 points.
Two Stars players finished with double-doubles, Two-way guard Josh Christopher had 16 points and 11 assists and two-way forward Micah Potter had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Santa Cruz faces the Ontario Clippers (4-1) at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Monday at 10:30 a.m.
Boys soccer
At Aptos 7, Ceiba 1: Eddie Álvarez recorded a natural hat trick in the 12th minute and finished with six goals, all scored in succession, by the 49th minute of the Mariners’ season opening win Tuesday.
Aptos led 4-0 at the half. Ceiba converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute to break up the shutout.
Nicolas Topete capped scoring in the 72nd minute.
Carlos Gutierrez had three assists for Aptos. Luve Granstrom had two assists, and Josiah Siqueiros and Esteban García also recorded assists.
Aptos hosts Pajaro Valley in nonleague action on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball
At Monte Vista Christian 77, San Lorenzo Valley 42: Nico Downie scored 15 points, and the Mustangs won the Mission 831 Shootout title on Wednesday night.
MVC jumped out to a 22-7 lead in the first quarter, led 33-17 at the half, and rolled with a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 23-10.
Bryce Brogan and Dominic Pierini each scored 12 points for MVC.
Jimmy King scored 13 points to lead SLV, and Noah Sterger added 10 points.
Pacific Collegiate 61, Trinity Christian 26: Senior Elias Golino had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and the Pumas won the consolation final at the Mission 831 Shootout at MVC School in Watsonville on Wednesday.
Sophomore Garrett Koontz had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pumas. Junior Jhayden Arredondo had seven points and five steals.
PCS (1-1) plays at SLV on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Harbor 56, at Pajaro Valley 50: Junior Guerande Houssin scored 21 points in the Pirates’ season opening win Wednesday.
Harbor trailed 21-17 at half, tied the score in the third quarter and led throughout the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Will Roden scored 12 points for the Pirates, and junior Miles Dix added 11 points.
North Salinas 55, at Watsonville 36: Max Aceves scored 13 points in the Wildcatz’s season opening loss Tuesday.
Andre Martinez scored 11 points for Watsonville, and Brody Legions added nine points.
Watsonville (0-1) plays at Salinas on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Girls basketball
Santa Clara 35, at MVC 33: Makayla Rader scored nine points for the Mustangs in their narrow loss in the Mission 831 Shootout championship on Wednesday.
The Mustangs missed their potential game-winning 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter.
Senior Rhazelle Gonzales and sophomore Samantha Bertoldi each scored seven points. Bertoldi was named to the all-tournament team.
MVC (1-1) plays at Monterey on Monday.
Aptos 47, Capuchino 35: Gabby Wickham and Laurel Southall each made four 3-pointers, and the Mariners won the consolation final at the Mission 831 Shootout at MVC School in Watsonville on Wednesday.
Wickham finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists, and Southall finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Abby Sherwood had nine points, 12 rebounds, and three assists for the Mariners, and Berkeley Ashby had four points, three rebounds, and five steals.
The Mariners (1-1) play at Jefferson in Daly City on Tuesday.
Watsonville 45, Piedmont Hills 37: Senior Isabella Love had nine points and three rebounds as the Wildcatz featured a balanced attack to win their season opener Tuesday.
Junior Fernanda Lazo had eight points and nine rebounds for Watsonville. Junior Monique De La Mora had six points and five steals, sophomore Stephanie Martinez had six points and three assists, and junior Hailey Brooks had four points and nine rebounds.
Watsonville (1-0) faces Valley Christian to open the Fremont Tournament on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
