Cal basketball player allegedly called ‘terrorist’ before confronting fan

California Golden Bears forward Fardaws Aimaq confronted a fan after they allegedly subjected the player to “abhorrent, offensive comments” during Monday’s SoCal Challenge tournament game against UTEP, coach Mark Madsen said in a statement Wednesday. The fan allegedly called Aimaq a “terrorist.”

Video of the incident on social media appeared to show Aimaq approach the fan after the game while saying, “You wanna talk? You wanna talk?” before getting closer and pointing his finger in the fan’s face.

Madsen said he asked the SoCal Challenge tournament director to conduct a formal investigation and bar the fan from the premises — The Pavilion in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

“I am disturbed that Fardaws was allegedly on the receiving end of such language and I’m disappointed that he confronted this fan in the stands,” Madsen added. “Fardaws understands my expectations for how he as a student athlete conducts himself.”

Madsen said consequences for Aimaq “will be handled internally.”

Aimaq, 24, is a two-time WAC Defensive Player of the Year. He transferred to California after spending last season with Texas Tech. Aimaq also played two seasons (2020 to 2022) at Utah Valley, where Madsen coached him, and one at Mercer.

Aimaq’s family fled war-torn Afghanistan in 1989, settling first in Germany, then Toronto and finally in Vancouver, where Aimaq was born and grew up.

In 2023-24, Aimaq is averaging 16 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game on 58.5 percent shooting from the floor. California plays Wednesday against Tulane.
