Some drivers had to prove they had insurance after switching companies

When car insurance rates go up, drivers do what any consumer would and shop around for a better price.

But making that switch has led to a glitch for some New Jersey drivers who said they had to prove they were covered after being flagged for lack of coverage when they received a pending registration suspension notice.

In June, 18 car insurance companies filed with the state for rate increases of 7% and nine insurers sought double digit rate hikes, citing increased collision repair costs and a rise in vehicle thefts. As a result, savvy drivers started shopping around.
