ELKO—On the Idaho Street-facing corner of Rancho Plaza Shopping Mall, Boyd’s Mercantile and Trading Co. displayed fall-themed attire and home decor in its window, bringing a new shopping experience to the Elko marketplace.
Wild West decor, woven purses, graphic tees, and glassware in pastel colors were just some of the options inside. The store also contained an array of colorful novelty objects, which included earrings shaped like hummingbirds, butterflies and skulls as well as bath bombs shaped like donuts and yin-yang symbols. Old-fashioned novelty candies such as brightly-colored taffy, tropical fruit chewing gum and gummy fruit slices took up one shelf.
A resident of Elko for 11 years, owner Erika Boyd was solely a stay-at-home mom until she decided Elko needed a store that offered a wider variety of gift options.
“There was nothing in town for me and my kids to go shopping at,” she said, as well as no stores that offered products that would interest all of her kids.

“We do consignment with a lot of local people,” she said of how she sources the products.
One locally sourced product was Savon De LeLeoup, a brand of soap and lotion made from goat milk. The bath bombs, candles and antiques came from Elko area businesses as well, she said.
“Some people just come in and ask us if we consign and others we have met,” she said, noting she discovered Savon De LeLeoup at a farmer’s market.
In terms of her business goals, “we were going to expand, but we’ll see if we can find a bigger location,” she said of any potential future plans.
While Boyd’s Mercantile and Trading Co. is housed in an old building, she said that running the business has been smooth sailing.
The business is open on weekdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
