New York Sea Grant invites Lake Erie waterfront property owners and shoreline managers to register for a free “Seiche and Winter Weather Shoreline Preparedness” webinar on Tuesday, November 28th from 1:00-2:30 PM. Funding for the webinar is provided by the New York State Environmental Protection Fund under the Authority of the New York Ocean and Great Lakes Ecosystem Conservation Act, through cooperative agreement with the New York State DEC’s Great Lakes Program.
The Lake Erie shoreline from Buffalo to the Pennsylvania border is impacted by seiche events — the result of wind blowing a sizeable standing wave across the lake and onto the shoreline, causing flooding, rapid and intense erosion, deposition of sand and debris, and potential hazardous conditions such as rip currents and risk to life.
