A popular city-based restaurant has been hit with a one-star hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Maharaja Grill and Balti House in Radford was found to have several problems during an inspection in October.

Maharaja Grill and Balti House is one of the top-rated restaurants in the city on Tripadvisor. Customers have described the food as ‘incredible’ however the hygiene measures were found to be below par when they were paid a visit by Coventry City Council.

Inspectors visit hundreds of businesses each year scoring them on hygiene, food handling and the management of food safety. Other factors taken into consideration are cleanliness, pest control and whether systems are in place to ensure good food hygiene is maintained.

Maharaja Grill and Balti House, at The Pilot Hotel on Catesby Road, sells a variety of foods, from ‘Samosas’ and ‘Onion Bhajis’ to ‘Chicken Tikka Korma’ and ‘Mixed Grills.’ Inspectors visited the city-based eatery on October 11, 2023.

Inspectors found that the business needed to make urgent changes to the management of food safety. Concerns were raised over the systems and checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat as well as employees’ knowledge about food safety.

Concerns were also raised about hygienic food handling, which includes the preparation, cooking, re-heating and cooling of food served. Cleanliness, however, was deemed to be adequate, said Coventry City Council.

A number of other city-based establishments have been hit with one-star hygiene ratings so far this year, including Indian Empress, Halal Meat Centre and Darya Restaurant and Coffee Shop. Inspectors found several problems at each establishment ranging from ’employees’ knowledge about food safety’ to ‘food handling.’
