Sarasota Contemporary Dance explores new artistic visions with Black theater troupe

Each year, Sarasota Contemporary Dance collaborates with different organizations or individual artists to explore new ways of telling stories through music and movement. This year’s program brings the company’s dancers together with artists from the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

“SCD + WBTT” is “a coming together of artistic visions and an opportunity to explore new creative horizons,” SCD co-founder and artistic director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott said. “We believe this performance will be a powerful and unforgettable experience for our audience.”

Wilmott and WBTT founder and artistic director Nate Jacobs have collaborated on past productions. This new collaboration will explore emotions, stories and rhythms expressed in everything from gospel, jazz, blues and Motown.

Sarasota Contemporary Dance artist Melissa Rummel and Westcoast Black Theatre performer Zion Thompson are part of the collaborative program “SCD + WBTT.”

Jacobs said that each new collaboration with SCD makes him feel more emboldened in his own work. “I know that each SCD dancer will bring professionalism to the work and their unique perspective and experiences as seasoned artists to create something reflective of a broader community,” he said in a statement. “This collaboration truly embodies the spirit of unity and creativity that the arts can inspire.”
