UMES’s Nutrition and Health extension program helping familes


UMES, Md. – Nutritionists and health officials say that diabetes and obesity is impacting millions Americans across the nation, and here on the Eastern Shore.

UMES is combating these chronic issues with their Family Nutrition and Health extension program.

UMES hires peer education from the community to teach other community members healthy dietary choices and lifestyle changes to improve their health.

A main focus of this program has been to reduce child obesity.

The Nutrition and Health Program Director Virgine Zoumenou says that they have reached 175 families this year alone, and between 400 and 500 kids.

“At least 80% of the participants improve their practice.”

“Their food safety practice, food resource management practice, diet quality practice and physical activity practices.”
