PARKERSBURG — The Christmas season in downtown Parkersburg will kick off at 8 p.m. Friday with the Smoot Theatre’s annual Hometown Christmas show.
At the center of the presentation is the Smoot House Band that will perform timeless holiday favorites, but with a new approach, Felice Jorgeson, Smoot artistic director, said.
Among the big band tunes will be carols with a jazz twist including “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Mary, Did You Know?” Other traditional secular arrangements with singers will include “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” with Marsha Parsons, “This Christmas” with Jack “Moon King” Comeau, “Let It Snow” with Brian Wigal and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” with Rick Lillard.
To be Introduced by Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus members Amariah and Johnathan Cole, “O Holy Night” will be performed by tenor Brian Wigal and pianist Jane Kincheloe.
After a long absence, Hometown Christmas will welcome back The Janes with their heart-warming “Carolin,’” Jorgeson said.
The first act ends with an emotional Mannheim Steamroller arrangement of “Silent Night” featuring cellist Bob Herceg, violinist Ashley Clark and pianist Kim Vineyard, Jorgeson said.
“No evening would be complete unless the audience hears alto saxophonist Hughie Lovelady and his rendition of ‘The Christmas Song,’” Jorgeson said.
The Smoot Singers will perform with the string players and the band in a presentation of “Variations on Jingle Bells,” “A Swingin’ Little Christmas Time” and “Irving Berlin’s Christmas,” which will bring the evening to a close as the audience joins the on-stage musicians for “White Christmas,” Jorgeson said.
“Who knows,” she said. “It might even snow.”
Tickets are $20 for adults and $1 for students. For ticket information, go to the Smoot website, https://tinyurl.com/4x7ctv8s or call 304 422-7529. The theater is at 213 Fifth St.
