Upstate school district approves $1M purchase of land for new career center

The Greenville County School Board of Trustees has unanimously approved buying the land necessary to build the replacement for an aging career center. On Tuesday, trustees approved the district spending just over $1 million to purchase just over 18 acres of land along Chapel Road and Vocational Drive, around a half-mile from the current career center site. “It will not require a millage increase,” board chair Carolyn Styles said. “We have capital improvement funds that we use for our long-range facility plans.”Scott Carlin, executive director of facilities, said the district conducted a facility study in 2019. That study recommended replacing the building, which, officials said, is one of the oldest in the district. “We’re not able to offer the same opportunity at that facility that we would like to,” Carlin said. The center offers programs in trades such as automotive technology, firefighting and welding. “They require special equipment and special designs, especially if we want to be cutting edge in our practice and our training for our students,” Styles said. “The facility and the classroom have to be appropriate for the studies.”Carlin said the new Donaldson Career Center could offer around 100,000 square feet of classroom space. He said the current building’s days are numbered. “The plan will be to demolish the current Donaldson Career Center on that campus and then relocate West Greenville to that campus,” Carlin said. “It is a small campus, but it is suitable for West Greenville.”Carlin said the new Donaldson Career Center is scheduled to open in 2031 but teased it could open sooner than the expected date.
