Pittsburg State University has scheduled two concerts next week.

“Sounds of the Season: Holiday Music Around the World” will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, 1711 S. Homer St.

The Southeast Kansas Symphony will once again perform a selection of music for the yuletide celebrations — from favorites like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” to new additions like “African Holy Night,” “Hanukkah Festival Overture” and “Ukrainian Carol of the Bells.”

The Pittsburg Hispanic Banda, directed by recent graduate Isaac Hernandez, from Mexico, also will perform several selections this year.

“A Christmas Festival” will provide an opportunity for audience members to sing along with popular favorites, including “Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls” and “Jingle Bells.”

The symphony is composed of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members, and is directed by Ramiro Miranda, assistant professor.

Tickets are on sale now for $12 for the public and $8 for senior citizens. The concert is free to youths under age 18 and to anyone with a Pittsburg State ID.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the PSU ticket office, 107 Weede Gymnasium, online at pittstate.edu/office/ticket-office or by calling 620-235-4796. Tickets also will be available for purchase at the door starting one hour before each concert.

“Timmons Chapel Holiday Concert” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in Timmons Chapel, near the University Lake at 409 E. Ford Ave.

For more than 50 years, the PSU Department of Music has presented an annual holiday concert in the Gothic-style chapel. This year’s concert will feature seasonal classical music as well as traditional carols performed by students, faculty and community members.

It is being directed by Joanne Britz, professor of music, and is free and open to the public.

The Bicknell Family Center for the Arts will record the live performance and will broadcast the concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at pittstate.tv and on its Facebook page for anyone who was unable to attend the live concert.

The recording will be archived for future viewing on demand.
