Environmental Commission Seeks High School Members

If you are a freshman-, sophomore- or junior-year high school student with an interest in the environment, the Verona Environmental Commission (VEC) has a volunteer opportunity for you.

The VEC is accepting applications for junior environmental commissioners to join the body, which evaluates local environmental issues and makes recommendations to the Town Council and Planning Board about implementing them. The VEC weighs in on open space preservation, clean water resources, stormwater management, air, noise, and light pollution, solid waste management and recycling, energy conservation and renewable energy resources, transportation planning, and the protection of flora, fauna, soil and landscape throughout Verona.

Junior environmental commission members will attend the VEC’s monthly meetings and lead an environmental project of their choosing. VEC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Projects could include things like community cleanup and beautification, an environmental education workshop, plastic reduction campaign, biodiversity or energy conservation initiatives, waste reduction, environmental art, green technology, or other topics.

To be chosen, students must complete this application by next Friday, December 8. The VEC is on Instagram here.
