Eastwood boys basketball continues to shine after road win

Another boys basketball season is underway and in typical fashion, the Eastwood Troopers will have a prominent role in how District 1-6A shakes out.

Last season, the Troopers won a district title and earned a bi-district win. This year the expectations are again high for the Troopers who won 24 games two season ago and 28 in the 2022-23 season. Go back to the 2019-20 season when it was in Class 5A and the Troopers reached the regional tournament.

Tuesday night saw Eastwood control the pace against El Dorado and it started District 1-6A competition with a 54-34 road victory against the Aztecs.

“I like our team,” Troopers coach Peter Morales said. “We’re making progress and we’re working hard. We still have work to do but I believe we have lots of potential on this team to make a push for a district title.”

The Troopers got 17 points from Devin-Falk Ramirez and 12 points from Marcus Bennett to lead Tuesday’s win. The Troopers led for most of the game, minus a 2-2 tie in the first quarter and were up 34-11 at the break.

“Our energy is really good and I really like this team,” Falk-Ramirez said. “We’ve still got some things to work on and our goal (is) to keep improving all the time.”

Added Bennett: “We have different guys that can step up and be effective on offense and contribute in different ways. We will continue to improve.”

The Troopers also got key contributions Tuesday from Julien Falk-Ramirez, Devin’s brother, who is a freshman, Nathyan Sauceda and Israel Flores.

Before Eastwood gets back into district play next week, it heads to Mansfield for a tournament against some solid Texas teams. First up on Thursday will be Allen High School.

“It’s a very good tournament this weekend,” Morales said. “We want to compete at a high level and continue to find ways to improve in everything. We’ll be tested.”

Added Devin Falk-Ramirez: “It’s been great playing along side my brother. We have two years to do this and he helps me get better. We push each other to be better every day.”
