Gumla: Residents of Gumla can now look forward to its maiden book fair to be held on December 8 and 9 at Birsa Munda Agro Park of the town here under the aegis of Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) of the education department.
The country’s top publishing houses like HarperCollins, MacMillan, Penguin Books, Rupa, Orient Longman, Hachette India, Taxman, S Chand, National Book Trust, Cambridge University Press, Sahitya Bhawan, Pustak Mahal, Upkar Prakashan, Random House and others have been invited to the fair.
One major purpose of the administration is to buy books from the fair for proposed libraries of the district’s Schools of Excellence and other model schools.
Gumla district education officer (DSE) Md Wasim Ahmed said, “All major publishers, writers in different languages across the country and big book sellers from Jharkhand are being invited to the two-day book fair being organised under the aegis of the JEPC.”
“Entry to the grand book fair has been made free for all from publishers, book traders and public,” he said.
Gumla DC Karn Satyarthi told TOI: “We are inviting all big publishing houses to our book fair which is being staged here for the first time. We want residents of this area to develop an interest in reading books be it literature, science & technology and all other subjects as books are a treasure of knowledge.”
“Books on literature of different languages, courses of study (schools and colleges) and competitive examinations — UPSC, JPSC, JEE ,NEET, GAT, NET and various others will be available at the proposed fair so that the readers, students and local school managements can buy books of their choice and need at their doorstep,” Satyarthi said.
The DC said, “We are contacting authors of different languages and subjects to ensure their their participation in the fair.”
“The administration is planning theme-based panel discussions in order to make the fair a memorable one. We hope the book fair will create a new reading environment in the district,” he added.

Cricketer S Sreesanth booked in cheating case
Cricketer S Sreesanth, along with Rajiv Kumar and Venkatesh Kini, is facing a police case for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property. The complaint was filed by Sareesh Gopalan, who alleges that Rajiv Kumar and Venkatesh Kini received Rs 18.70 lakh under the pretext of establishing a sports academy in Kollur, where Sreesanth holds a partnership. Sreesanth is listed as the third accused in this case.
