Ryan Gosling’s Ken-ergy led to a bit of a twist in the new Barbie movie, which showed a different side of it.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Mark Ronson, who is the executive producer of Barbie: The Album, said that it was Gosling’s idea to make the song into an emotional and powerful melody for the movie.

The seven-time Grammy winner told the magazine that when he first pitched the song to director Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach, he didn’t think it would become a key scene in the movie. In fact, all he wanted was for them not to laugh at him.

Ronson said, “When I sent the demo, I kind of mumbled that line, because I was like, if they don’t like it, I don’t want Greta and Noah to think that I’m trying to provide the funny.”

The song was then played for the La La Land star, who, according to VF, “felt so deeply connected to it” that he asked to do it in the movie.

In fact, Gerwig had to redo an important part of the movie just so she could include the song, which is important to the plot.

Ronson went to England to record Gosling’s vocals and was impressed by his “subdued baritone.”

“He really got [that] it had to walk this line of not being funny or parody,” he said. “But obviously, the song is also kind of ridiculous at times. So, he was really amazing, and when he really did start hitting the big notes, I was like, this dude is a vocal powerhouse!”

Ronson also asked Slash and Josh Freese, the new drummer for the Foo Fighters, to play on the track.

The movie about Barbie is set to come out on July 21, 2023.
