Lorain Lions lend a helping hand to Second Harvest Food Bank


The Lorain Lions lent a helping hand to Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, 5510 Baumhart Road in Lorain, on Nov. 28 by inspecting, sorting and packing food for the hungry, according to a news release.

Lorain Lions members volunteer monthly at Second Harvest from 5-7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month, the release said.

Additionally in November, Lorain Lions members supported Second Harvest by giving out food at local food distribution centers, boxing food for distribution and delivering food to those unable to attend food distribution centers, according to the release.

Lorain Lions had 14 volunteers at these events contributing 70 man hours to help community members in need of food, according to the release.

One of the Lions Clubs International five global causes are hunger.

Locally, Loran Lions serve to ensure all community members have access to nutritious foods, according to the release.

The Lion Clubs global cause for hunger is in alignment with the mission of Second Harvest, the release said.

Thus, the Lorain Lions Club found a natural partner in Second Harvest to help support community hunger needs, according to the release.

“The ‘Super Six’ most needed foods are: breakfast cereal, peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned tuna or chicken, canned soups or stews and canned entrees,” said Lion Barry Buck, chairman of the Lorain Lions Second Harvest service project in the release.

Second Harvest’s mission is to grow hope in this region by creating pathways to nutritious food, the release said.

The Lorain Lions Club is a group of 45 men and women who meet at 5:30 p.m. the first Thursday of the month and at noon the second and third Thursdays of the month at Rebman’s On the Avenue, 5300 Oberlin Ave. in Lorain.

Meetings include a meal, club business followed by a guest speaker.

The Lorain Lions Club has aided the blind and visually impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened the greater Lorain community through hands-on service and humanitarian projects, the release said.
