A Louisiana castle for sale goes viral on Zillow Gone Wild. What are people saying?

The little white castle on Irish Bayou has captivated the imaginations of Louisianans and drivers on Interstate 10 for decades, but the fantastical property is just now getting the national attention it deserves.

Zillow Gone Wild, an Instagram page with nearly 2 million followers dedicated to the nation’s most unique real estate listings, recently shared photos of what’s known locally as the New Orleans “Fisherman’s Castle,” aptly describing it as a VCLC, a “very cute little castle.”

While some commenters were amazed by the castle — including its “15,688 mini kitchen drawers” and Shrek-like design and location — others weren’t so impressed.

“Cute is not the word I would use,” one commenter wrote. Gasp!

“Sorry, its heinous,” another said. How dare they?!

Much of the confusion seemed to stem from the size of the castle and how it was built, with several commenters hypothesizing that it could be made of LEGOS, papier-mâché, or maybe even 3-D printed.

“What in the mini golf?” one person asked.

The Fisherman’s Castle has generated a lot of interest locally since it was listed by NOLA Living Realty in 2022, but it has yet to find its royal family.

With its medieval-inspired kitchen, small but mighty throne room and winding staircase, the property is designed to resemble a 14th-century style French chateau. It was built over several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s by local builder Simon Villemarette, who was hoping to capitalize on the crowds that were expected to come to the city for the 1984 World’s Fair.

With fewer than 1,400 square feet and just two bedrooms and one bathroom, the Louisiana castle will be a cozy space for a potential new buyer. But included in the $500,000 asking price is an adjacent vacant lot and use of a fishing camp across the street, opening up the possibility for commercial uses or summer rentals.

It’s currently undergoing renovations, according to the real estate company.
