‘Understories’ at Newport Visual Arts Center

Baba Yaga’s new exhibit, “Understories,” opens this Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Newport Visual Arts Center. An opening reception will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Nik, the artist behind Baba Yaga, enamored with the hidden worlds along the forest floor. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, she spent a childhood surrounded by nature — from ocean beaches to the deep woods. For Nik, these are familiar places filled with memory, magic, and secret treasures. Primarily self-taught, she developed her own style and method of jewelry and artmaking over many years. Baba Yaga, translated as “ugly grandmother,” has been a labor of love; a line of artisan jewelry that is as unique, beautiful, and enduring as it is wearable.
