Jurors called to the Westmoreland County Courthouse looking for some grub Monday didn’t have to brave the weather to get a meal.
Caffe Market Express, a new restaurant on the Upper Park level of the courthouse, welcomed more than 170 jurors and hundreds of Westmoreland employees on its first day of business.
With an array of prepared sandwiches, soups, pasta, pizza and sweets, the restaurant settled into a spot that for decades served food to visitors and staffers at the government complex in Greensburg.
It replaces a Subway restaurant that closed in July after about seven years in business.
“The county asked for multiple choices, for hot foods, convenience and affordable,” owner Lisa Hegedus said.
Hegedus and her husband spent the past two months retrofitting the restaurant space for what she said will be a new convenience for county workers and visitors.
The eatery serves breakfast and lunch options and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The courthouse has hosted an in-house restaurant for decades and contracted with Subway in 2016 to replace an old-fashioned cafeteria that offered low-cost meals to county staff and visitors.
Caffe Market Express will operate much in the same vein as a cafeteria, Hegedus said.
And the county will take a piece of the action. It will receive 11% commissions on sales and is guaranteed a minimum monthly payment of $1,500 under terms of the contract approved in August.
Hegedus, who also owns Caffe Barista across the street from the courthouse, said food will be prepared at her Otterman Street location and brought over each day. She hired five additional employees to supply and staff the new courthouse restaurant. About 300 customers were expected Monday.
“We’re trying to expand on our customer base. This is for people who have 20 to 30 minutes and want something good,” Hegedus said.
