Smart Gadgets to Prevent Water Thefts and Plug Pipe Leaks in Gurgaon | Gurgaon News

Gurgaon: After a pilot run, a system with smart devices to help modulate water supply and plug any leaks or thefts will be installed in a pipeline that caters to over a dozen sectors in the city, GMDA officials said on Tuesday.
Officials said the Central Integrated Water Management System (CIWMS) will be installed in the water supply network from the Basai treatment plant to the boosting station in Sector 16.This boosting station supplies water to 237 underground tanks that cover sectors 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 25A, 26, 26A, 27, 28, 29, 32, 39 and 43, among others.
CIWMS uses technology in the underground tanks and pipelines to identify and monitor water supply flow. There will be flow meters to gauge flow, control valves to set data on the quantum of water to be supplied to any area, pressure transmitters to gauge pressure, and level transmitters to measure the level of water in the underground tanks and the pipelines.
The system will send alerts on these measures to the Integrated Command & Control Center (ICCC).
Officials said the aim was to ensure equitable water distribution and reduce the amount of water that is wasted due to leaks, thefts or any other reasons before it reaches households.
GMDA conducted the pilot project last year and officials said the system cut down water wastage and leaks from 70% to 19%.
The pilot project was tested on the 1,200mm pipeline between Basai and Dundahera. It was approved for expansion at the tenth authority meeting in June last year.
GMDA officials said that the tender for the project has been floated and it will be completed 12 months after allotment. The project will cost the authority around Rs 17.5 crore.
The official said that after the pilot project, residents had better access to water.
“The application of CIWMS is being taken up to ensure equitable distribution of water supply across Gurgaon and to bring down illegal water supply connections in the city. In this phase, the 1,300mm water supply pipeline from WTP Basai to Sector 16 boosting station is being taken up and tender for this work has been floated. This will ensure judicious supply of water even to the tail-end connections and also cut down on the non-revenue water,” said PC Meena, GMDA’s chief executive officer
Additionally, a provision to monitor the working of pumping machinery at WTPs at Basai and Chandu Budhera plants has also been included in the scope of work for the project tender. “Water quality sensors will also be installed at the Basai WTP, which will display real-time data at the ICCC and provide information on the quality of water being supplied from the plant to all its connections,” Meena said.
