‘I went to Amazon’s Second Chance pop-up and bagged a Ninja air fryer for £75’

Amazon has opened its first in-person pop-up store to offer festive shoppers a chance to scoop up quality returned and refurbished products for a bargain price.

If you have missed out on Black Friday deals, the online retailer’s Second Chance platform could be one for you.

As its name suggests, Amazon has put out some of their top second-hand deals for people shopping pre-loved items, with savings up to 50% off and all proceeds going to the UK’s leading children’s charity, Barnardo’s.

I visited the pop-up store in the Brunswick Centre, near Russell Square in London and bagged myself a bargain air fryer just in time for Christmas.

The staff explained to me that some items are brand-new but with damaged packaging and all used items have been checked by technicians for quality control.

Inside the shop they have beauty gadgets, gaming consoles like PS5 and Nintendo Switch, kitchen appliance, kids’ toys and also Apple products and Samsung Galaxy watches.

At the beauty section, they have the Philips Lumea Prestige IPL device, which is usually priced over £300, for £190.

You can save nearly £15 on a Revlon One-Step Style Booster, which can be used as a 2-in-1 hairbrush dryer.

The store runs on a first-come-first-served basis so you have spotted something you like, make sure to grab it because if it’s gone, it’s gone.

The staff will restock every day but there’s a chance that it won’t be the same product.

And I was shocked when I saw Ninja air fryers over the home goods section.

On the shelf, they’ve put up a Ninja single drawer air fyer and a Ninja Speedi 10-in-1 Rapid Cooker.

You’d be looking at £169.99 and £249.99 for these if you are buying them from retail stores like John Lewis or Currys. But as “preloved” items, Amazon is selling the single drawer air fryer for £75 and the rapid cooker for £170.

I had a closer look at the appliances and they looked as new to me — no scratches and no chipped corners — and it came with the original box. My inner voice told me: “That’s going home with me.”

Over the tech corner, they’ve got Echo Dot (5th Gen) with clock for £25 and Beats Solo 3 Wireless headphones for £80, instead of £199 for full price.

But some items are not particularly cheap, they are selling an Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max, 128GB for £390 but I can find a refurbished one for the same price.

They are selling a PS5 console for £400 but on eBay, I can find a sealed box version for £450.

But you can get a Nintendo Switch for £200 or a Vax vacuum cleaner for £70.

The pop-up store runs until 7pm on Tuesday, December 12 and if you can’t make it in person, second hand items are also on sale online with year-round savings here. You can also many cheap second hand items on ebay.
