Art colony names 5 new directors


The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC), one of Gloucester’s two cultural districts and considered the oldest art colony in America, has named five new members to its board of directors.

Serving for the term beginning 2023-2024 will be:

Elizabeth Carey, former executive director of Discover Gloucester, promoting tourism and the visitor-based economy, through initiatives such as Cape Ann Winter Lights, Girls Getaway Weekend, and Culture Splash. She also had a 25-year tenure as publisher and owner of Where magazines’ Boston franchise.

Vanessa Michalak, an artist member of the art colony and owner of Michalak Fine Art on Madfish Wharf. She has a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and was the 2021 Gloucester Invitational Resident of the Goetemann Artist Residency.

Brian Murphy, who specializes in web ads, print, environmental advertising, and graphic design, offering a hands-on approach from concept to finished piece. He has strong relationships with photographers, illustrators, and printers, facilitating strategic solutions for clients.

Ruzanna Queenan, founder of Queenvest, focusing on empowering women property investors. She has experience in finance, including roles at Fidelity Investments, Sapient, Affiliated Managers Group, and as a former vice president at State Street Bank.

Amy Sudarsky, who holds a Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University, and Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University School of Fine Arts. Her academic career includes positions at the B.U. School of Visual Arts, The Art Institute of Boston and Lesley College. She is now helping to manage the growth of RNAC workshops.

“We are very pleased to welcome these additions to the board of RNAC, which reflect the wide-ranging talents and interests of the whole RNAC community,” co-President Janice Brand said in a prepared statement. “As a volunteer-led nonprofit, we are fortunate to be so rich in member enthusiasm and commitment.”

The new directors join current board members Stephen Gondert, Brenda Malloy, Stephanie Mason-Thibodeau, Peggy Cullen Matlow, Cynthia Roth, Patti Salvucci, Laur Tonelli and Paul Trefry.

Joining the Executive Board members Brand, co-President Jeffrey Newell, Vice President Susan Alvey, and Treasurer Mary Mandarino is Secretary Martha Sutyak. Outgoing Secretary Barbara Moody steps into RNAC Emerita position.

The mission of Rocky Neck Art Colony Inc., a 501-3c organization, is to nurture excellence in the arts and celebrate the artistic history and culture of Rocky Neck. The organization provides opportunities for educational and professional development in the arts, including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, scholarships and residencies.
