Officials with AAA said nearly 861,000 Marylanders will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, which is a 2.7% increase from last year.
Nationally, nearly 44 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more this holiday, nearing the record total set in 2005. Officials said more people will be flying or taking cruises this year compared to last year.
While travel may be higher this year for the holiday in Maryland, so are gas prices. The average price for regular-unleaded fuel in the state is $3.55 per gallon, about 8 cents a gallon higher compared to last year.
Maryland State Police and other agencies promised increased patrols on the roads this weekend.
