As Memorial Day weekend gets underway, travelers are hitting the roads and taking to the skies to celebrate the unofficial “start of summer.”AAA estimates 44 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday, including 2 million people out of New England. “We’re going to Florida for Memorial Day weekend,” said Moselle Portnow, whose family caught a flight out of Burlington’s Patrick Leahy Airport Wednesday before the big travel rush. Portnow said they’re excited to spend the holiday weekend with loved ones. “So we’re gonna see our cousins,” she said. “So they’re all very excited to go and head out.”Meanwhile, other travels are making their way to our region, including Mike Weber and his family who headed north for the holiday. “We’re having a family get-together in Maine in a couple days, and we wanted to start up north and work our way down through Vermont, New Hampshire and take a couple days to see everything,” Weber said. But Memorial Day isn’t the only thing he’s celebrating. “My wife and I just celebrated our 50th anniversary, so this is our little family trip to celebrate,” he said.
