If you’re looking for inspiring, creative, and thoughtful art events throughout the city, look no further than Abbey Arts.
Since 2005, Abbey Arts has curated events where art and community flourish for audiences of all ages and incomes. Events include music, dance, visual arts, comedy, open mics, storytelling, podcasting, and more.
Director of Operations Juliann Itter says, “We want to produce events that encompass what humans really need in their life.” She notes that Abbey Arts events are meant to help attendees slow down, take a breath, and enjoy the arts. It’s also a time and space for emerging artists to share their work and enrich the community.
Many events are held at the beautiful Fremont Abbey, but Abbey Arts also hosts activities at Ballard Homestead, St. Mark’s Cathedral and various venues around town.
Lindsay Schoeneman, a Visual Artist-in-Residence, notes, “There is a special atmosphere to each and every venue that Abbey Arts hosts events in. The spaces feel intimate, homey, and grand. You may think you are just going to a show, but you will leave feeling more connected to others and part of something beautiful.”
Whether it’s improv, cello, live painting, a nap concert, or singles gathering, these events are designed to be a safe space for anyone in Seattle.
“Abbey Arts events are creative, welcoming, and relaxed not boozy, drunk parties or crowded, noisy clubs,” says Creative Director Nathan Marion.
My husband and I recently attended a Moth StorySLAM at Bloedel Hall in St. Mark’s Cathedral. The room was filled with an audience excited to hear amateur storytellers in an open-mic style event. The emcee was entertaining, the stories varied, and the overall vibe was relaxed.
It’s the perfect mix of going out without overdoing it.
Events Curator Alexandra Friedman agrees, “As an attendee, it always feels so seamless and inclusive, and helps me feel like I’m part of something niche and special, even when I’m surrounded by ‘the big city.’”
