iHerb answers demand for pet supplement products
California-based iHerb is expanding its pet care offerings, responding to increased spending on pet supplements over the last five years.
Morgan Stanley projects that U.S. consumers are likely to spend nearly $1,500 per pet annually within the next two years.
According to iHerb, the company sells pet care products in over 120 countries, providing opportunity for brands to connect with a global audience of pet owners. The global pet care industry is expected to increase to almost $500 billion by 2030, fueled by a growing pet population worldwide, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, Pet Economy Research.
“As more pet owners focus on their pets’ health and quality of life, we’ve seen tremendous growth in the demand for premium health care products, dietary supplements, treats and grooming supplies,” said Lindsey Wiefels, SVP of merchandising at iHerb.

Prenatal lutein-zeaxanthin may boost carotenoid levels for mother and baby
Prenatal supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin may boost both maternal and infant carotenoid levels and improve ocular development and function in the babies, according to a new study funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute.
Data published in Ophthalmology Science indicated that supplements containing Kemin’s FloraGLO Lutein and OPTISHARP Natural Zeaxanthin led to statistically significant and clinically important increases in maternal and infant systemic carotenoid levels.
“From the infants’ perspective, the bioavailability of lutein and zeaxanthin could potentially provide an early start for their lifelong physiological and protective roles for the developing retina and infant vision,” said Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Addo from the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah and lead author on the paper.
“The clinical relevance of differences in foveal maturity observed in our study lies in the potential long-term benefits for visual and cognitive development. Enhanced foveal maturity may improve infant visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Thus, a well-developed fovea is essential for sharp central vision and is critical for recognizing faces as children grow.”

The four health conditions driving functional products growth in Asia
Asia consumers’ holistic approach to healthy living is increasingly driving demand for functional products, with sleep, immunity, hydration and gut health trending, says market intelligence firm Innova Markets Insights.
“Consumers in Asia have recently purchased food and beverages with functional benefits, especially for improving sleep, boosting immunity, hydration, and improving gut health,” said Fellicia Kristianti, customer success manager for APAC at Innova Markets Insights.
Kristianti was speaking at Fi Asia 2024, held at the Jakarta International Expo from 4–6 September.
The presentation highlighted trends and consumer attitudes revealed by surveys conducted from 2023 to 2024, where 59% of consumers in Asia say they are eating more whole plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
Additionally, 40% are consuming food and beverage that supports body functions like immunity and gut.
The surveys also showed that 23% have taken supplements or other forms of health remedies, while 36% are reducing or avoiding alcohol.
Overall, the findings indicated that consumers are adopting preventive measures to enhance both physical and mental well-being.
