All ages help feed others at Evangelical Lutheran Church Food Pantry

The Evangelical Lutheran Church Food Pantry is marking 40 years of helping feed people in need in Greencastle and Antrim Township.

Plans for the pantry started in 1982 with former ELC members Glen and Rose Sell, and the first order was filled in February 1983.

Today’s clients are similar to those of four decades ago, people who have been laid off, are unable to work, have lower or fixed incomes, or face other challenging circumstances.

The pantry serves residents of the Greencastle-Antrim School District, some regularly about every eight weeks and others as difficulties such as family emergencies or health issues arise.

Children from the congregation of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle are shown with some of the items in its food pantry, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year.

The regular upkeep of the pantry is aided by all ages within the church.

Preschool and elementary-age Sunday school classes help sort the donated items and stock the shelves. Older Sunday school classes carry in donated items, check expiration dates and fill orders.

The pantry does not receive any subsidies, relying solely on food and monetary donations from church members and the community.

Food drives are held by local organizations such as Boy Scout troops, other churches, school students and the U.S. Postal Service.

“Donated items to our pantry are greatly appreciated, along with the monetary donations to help supplement our inventory,” said church member Krista Smith.

Food donations can be dropped off at the church office weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  Monetary donations may be mailed to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, PA 17225.For more information or to request assistance, call the church office at 717-597-3310.
