A&M women’s tennis team beats TCU to earn spot in ITA National Indoor Championship


The ninth-ranked Texas A&M women’s tennis team defeated TCU 4-0 to cap ITA Kickoff Weekend action on Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center, earning a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championship in Seattle on Feb 9-12.

“I am very pleased with our performance today,” A&M coach Mark Weaver said. “We get better with every match and TCU is a good team and we handled them decisively. We are excited to go back to Seattle and our ultimate goal is to win a national championship here and that’s another opportunity for us.”

A&M, which qualified for indoor nationals for a seventh straight time, will play Miami at 11 a.m. Friday in Coral Gables, Fla., at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

A&M’s Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres had victories in both singles and doubles to help A&M (4-2) win its 45th straight home match.

Stoiana and Kupres, who are ranked third in the country in doubles, grabbed a 6-1 victory over Yu-Chin Tsai and Chiho Mushika. Top-ranked Stoiana, Kupres and Daria Smetannikov had wins in singles to give A&M the match.
