AMC Brings Popcorn Product Line at Walmart to Diversify Struggling Company

AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater operator in the United States, is introducing a range of microwave and ready-to-eat popcorn products to diversify its business.

The company’s desire to expand into retail was initially mentioned in 2021. Today, AMC Perfectly Popcorn will be available exclusively at Walmart beginning March 11. The rollout will prepare the products for the March 12 Oscar Awards.

“On March 11, which is Oscars weekend, we will enter the multibillion-dollar retail popcorn sector with at-home popcorn with the authentic taste of actual movie theater popcorn,” stated CEO Adam Aron in a news release.

Aron presented the popcorn line as one of the improvements that had helped maintain the viability of the AMC brand in recent years, alongside reclining seating, membership incentives, and premium formats.

“With our retail release of AMC Theatres microwave popcorn and ready-to-eat popcorn, we continue to Make Movies Better, this time in the comfort of your home,” he stated. We remain committed to future developments that will continue to surprise and excite moviegoers and our stockholders.

AMC’s popcorn will be sold in 2,600 Walmart stores and on walmart.com.

The latest earnings report for the movie theater company is also scheduled to be released on Thursday, and shares rose 20 percent in anticipation. Analysts forecast tailwinds for the movie theater industry in 2023, contributing to the stock’s about 46 percent gain over the past five trading days.

In recent years, AMC has struggled to lessen its financial burden, and in November, it posted its twelfth straight quarterly loss. The company’s fourth-quarter earnings are not anticipated to improve significantly, but analysts have a more bullish outlook for 2023.
