Okla. — An indigenous-owned and operated clothing store, Burning Wagon Designs, hosted a fashion show in honor of a missing and murdered indigenous woman.
FOX23 spoke with Olivia Gray, Co-Founder of Burning Wagon on Thursday.
“This is who we are and we are proud of who we are and we want everyone to see us,” Gray said.
Burning Wagon Designs, here in Green Country, were recently on the cover of vogue with Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone wearing their handkerchief design.
The store was co-created by an Osage Nation mother and her daughters.
“ I was working for my tribal government at that point, and I am a domestic violence advocate, and I need something to wear to court,” Gray explained.
Gray said said their fashion show on Oct. 5 was in honor of Emily Morgan, who was found dead alongside her friend in a car in McAlester on Aug. 26, 2016. Her case is still open.
FOX23 also spoke with Co-Founder of Burning Wagon Mary Hammer.
“In honor of Emily Morgan, who is one of our missing and murdered indigenous relatives, before she was murdered, she was a model and she liked to model and she was very good at it,” Hammer said. “So before we had our model go out there, we were like just remember that if she was here she would be running circles.”
FOX23 spoke with Tytiana Coleman, Comanche Nation Model.
“It makes me feel very empowered to be able to express this with them and feel good in the clothing I wear”,” she said.
