Angela Bassett received entertainer of the year and an acting award for her role in the television series “9-1-1” at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” starring Angela Bassett as a Marvel superhero, received the award for best film at the ceremony, which was carried live on BET from Pasadena, California.
Viola Davis received the award for best actress for her performance in the action epic “The Woman King,” which she championed and acted in. Will Smith won for the enslavement drama “Emancipation,” his first film since last year’s Academy Awards, where he smacked comedian Chris Rock before receiving his first best actor award.
Davis remarked, about a quote from her character in the film, which she deemed her magnum opus, “I never want to be too cowardly as a Black woman, as an artist.” “I’d like to congratulate everyone associated with ‘The Woman King,’ as that was nothing but high-octane courage.”
The creator and actress of the series, Quinta Brunson, called her co-stars to the stage and praised “black-ish” for paving the way for her program.
Saturday, the 54th NAACP Image Awards were held in Pasadena, California, with Queen Latifah as the host. Serena Williams was awarded the Jackie Robinson Sports Award, which celebrates persons in sports for outstanding athletic success and dedication to social justice, civil rights, and community service.
Queen Latifah presented the ceremony honoring entertainers, athletes, and authors of color. Special awardees were Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, and Ben Crump, an attorney for civil rights.
