Animal dumping in Anthony raises concerns for neighbors

ANTHONY, Fla. (WCJB) – Donna Crotser finished dropping off her son at school when she noticed animal dumping near her home.

“About 10 to 15 minutes later I come back by the roundabout again and I noticed that there’s a dead hog and six dead fish on the sidewalk on the roundabout,” shared Crotser.

Crotser lives in Anthony. She told TV20 the animals were lying on the ground of a roundabout near Northeast 97th Street Road.

She called Marion County Animal Services, Road Services, and Solid Waste but said she did not receive any assistance.

“They said no one would be able to help us that no Marion County services would take care of that and they did not have a landfill to dispose of it in,” stated Crotser.

Workers from the nearby convenience store said some customers brought the animal dumping to their attention in the morning. Croster said the animals spent more than 2 hours in the roundabout before she took it upon herself to remove them.

“I was kind of shocked that no one was willing to jump up and help us. It’s a county property and it’s not my property,” stated Crotser. “We were concerned for the county and the safety and the trauma from the kids and we just took care of it.”

After TV20 reached out to county officials, two workers with the county showed up at Crotser’s home.

Crotser said another resident saw the same exact animal dumping incident on Highway 40 in Anthony.

“If its not season, I would like for someone that’s responsible to have to pay for that. That’s poaching, it’s illegal and its wrong.”

Marion County officials said their responsibility is to move the animals out of the county right-of-ways and all sick, dead, or injured wildlife should be reported to Florida Fish and Wildlife.
