Anne Hathaway on Her First Major Fashion Purchase and the Item She’s Had the Longest

For the December issue of WWD Weekend, cover star Anne Hathaway opens up about her earliest fashion memory, her first major fashion purchase, the item she’s had in her closet and more.

“I was really lucky, my mom likes clothes and I have two incredibly chic grandmothers,” Hathaway says of her earliest fashion memory. “My mom knew that I liked to play dress-up so if she was done wearing an outfit she would put it in my playbox. So one of my earliest fashion memories was actually wearing a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress that had tulips on it. I loved that dress so much.”

She treated herself to her first major fashion purchase after landing her first movie, “The Princess Diaries.”

“When I got ‘The Princess Diaries’ I bought myself a pair of leather pants from Diesel. I remember getting taken by the costume designer to the 3rd Street Promenade. I scouted this pair of leather pants for the longest time, because I was the world’s biggest Angelina Jolie fan, and she always wore leather pants,” Hathaway says. “And when I got the ‘Princess Diaries’ I was like, this is my first movie, I’m getting leather pants.”

After wrapping her other major breakout movie — “The Devil Wears Prada” — she bought the item that has stayed in her closet the longest: a Rick Owens leather jacket.

“It was a gift to myself,” she says. “I recently got to tell [Rick Owens] that, and I cried.”

As for fashion guilty pleasures, she says she can never have too many black boots — even if they do look rather similar.

“Another fashion guilty pleasure?” she says. “Nope, I just enjoy it.”
