Outdoor art installation
BLOOMVILLE — A reception to mark the opening of an outdoor participatory art installation called “Waking Song” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25. It will take place at the site of the former train turntable, not far from the trailhead of the Catskill Scenic Trail in Bloomville.
According to a media release from West Kortright Centre, the work is the result of a collaboration between artist Jesse Lee Wilson and elementary school students who attend South Kortright Central School.
Keeping the historic significance of the site in mind, Wilson and the students discussed the tradition of using symbols to communicate with travelers along the railroad. Each student created a pictograph which has been engraved in the installation for passersby to see.
The project was funded by a Challenge America award from the National Endowment for the Arts, along with the New York State Council on the Arts, Robinson Broadhurst Foundation and A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation.
