Area basketball roundup: Wamego girls rebound after injury


The Wamego girls picked up three wins in the past week, despite being without one of their leading scorers Alexis Hecht. The sophomore suffered a left arm fracture but is looking to return by the end of February.

The Lady Raiders (12-1) kicked off the winning stretch by dominating Louisburg 63-24 on Wednesday. They collected their second win 47-37 against Rock Creek before topping Abilene 49-33 on Monday.

Versus Abilene, the Raiders were led by Leah Winter with 16 points, followed by Sara Springer with 15.

The Lady Raiders still trail 13-1 Fort Scott in the 4A East Standings, placing second.

The Wamego boys went 1-2 in their three matchups after opening with a 56-45 win over Louisburg. Rock Creek outmatched the Raiders 61-32 before Abilene defeated them 65-44.

Versus the Cowboys, Spencer Hecht had 14 and Dusty Monroe had 12. Drew Pettay had nine points and six rebounds.

The Raiders (4-9) fell to 12th in the 4A East Standings.

Each Wamego squad will host Eudora on Friday.

ROCK CREEK

The Rock Creek boys extended their win streak to double digits on Friday, taking down Wamego on the road.

The Mustangs (11-1) won handily, nearly doubling up the Raiders 61-32 to become winners of 10 straight. The win moved Rock Creek into first place in the 4A East standings.

The Rock Creek girls (4-8) dropped their matchup against Wamego 47-37, staying put at 13th in the 4A East standings.

Inclement weather led to a postponement of Rock Creek’s Tuesday matchup versus Valley Heights last week. A rescheduled date has not been announced.

The Mustangs will head to Rossville and Riley County this week, playing on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

FRANKFORT

The Frankfort girls (11-2) became winners of four straight last week, defeating Onaga and Clifton Clyde.

Hattie Gros led the way with 21 points in the 57-34 win over Onaga followed by 17 points in the 55-37 victory over Clifton Clyde who was undefeated before last week.

In the first matchup, Breleigh Ebert, sister of former K-State player Emilee Ebert, scored 13 points. In the latter matchup, Gros was joined in double-figures by Sydney Wapp.

With the win over the Eagles, Frankfort moved into a tie for first in the 1A DI sub-state.

The Frankfort boys (7-6) took care of business against Onaga, 53-18, but fell to the Eagles 65-53. They moved up one spot to fourth in the Mankato-Rock Hills sub-state.

Frankfort has the week off before ending the season on a three-game visiting stretch, starting with a trip to Axtell on Monday.

WABAUNSEE

The Charger girls (8-3) escaped Riley County with a narrow 39-37 victory on Friday, snapping a two-game skid.

Wabaunsee moved into a tie with Valley Heights for first in the 2A Wabaunsee sub-state.

The Wabaunsee boys weren’t as fortunate on their trip to Riley, falling 48-37, which dropped them into seventh place in their sub-state.

Wabaunsee’s schedule gets busier over the next week, hosting Lyndon on Tuesday, Rossville on Friday and Silver Lake on Monday.

RILEY COUNTY

The Riley County girls (5-7) nearly got the upset of first-place Wabuansee but fell 39-37 on Friday. The Falcons remain last in their sub-state as the remaining seven teams are .500 or better.

The Riley County boys (3-9) became winners of back-to-back games after taking down Wabuansee 48-37 on Friday. The Falcons moved up one spot, now sitting seventh in the 3A Riley County sub-state.

Riley County will face Marysville on Tuesday, Rock Creek on Friday and St. Marys on Monday.

BLUE VALLEY

The Blue Valley boys (6-7) have won three straight contests, righting the ship after a shaky start to the winter.

The Rams topped Doniphan West 60-53 on Friday before keeping their momentum rolling against Linn, 48-45, on Saturday. They moved into fourth place in their sub-state with the wins.

The Blue Valley girls were unsuccessful in a Twin Valley League tournament rematch against Doniphan West, falling 54-35. The girls got back on track with a 45-42 win over Linn.

The Rams (5-8) are second-to-last in their 1A Division II sub-state, only sitting ahead of the winless Southern Cloud.

Blue Valley will host Onaga on Friday.

VALLEY HEIGHTS

The Valley Heights squad’s only matchup last week was canceled against Rock Creek.

The Mustang girls (8-3) are tied for first with Wabaunsee in the 2A Wabaunsee sub-state while the boys (5-7) are fifth.

The Valley Heights squads will play Hanover on Tuesday and Axtell on Friday.
