Arlington police giving away free steering wheel locks, AirTags to prevent car theft

ARLINGTON (DC News Now) — The Arlington Police Department (APD) announced a new measure to prevent car theft in the city, which they say will likely rise as summer approaches.

Arlington residents who park in the city while at work are eligible to receive a free steering wheel lock. Certain car models can also get an Apple AirTag.

The makes and models eligible to get an AirTag are on the list of the most commonly reported stolen cars in Arlington County in 2023, including several models of Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, and Honda cars. Cars that appear on the 2022 Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles Nationally List are also eligible.

Police recommend crime prevention tips and strategies to keep yourself safe from theft, such as the 9 p.m. routine — a nightly security check to make sure cars are locked, exterior lights and security cameras are activated, and personal belongings have been removed from cars.

The anti-theft devices will be given away at two events the Arlington Police are hosting in the community.

  • Wednesday, April 17 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church parking lot, 830 23rd St. S., from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 23 at Arlington Assembly of God parking lot, 4501 N. Pershing Dr., from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
