Williamsport, Md. —On March 22, 2025, Homewood at Williamsport mounted it’s second annual “Art for Life” exhibition of visual art showcasing the talent of many of its Independent Living residents.
“Perhaps it’s the beauty of our 28-acre campus of mature trees and plantings with all the warmth and charm of Western Maryland that has attracted an unusual number of highly talented visual artists here, but whatever the reason, all are thrilled when one of them shares their work in the halls of the Community Center,” said Executive Director Melissa Hadley.
The show let the public in on that little secret as 53 works of art by 17 residents were featured in an exhibition entitled “Art for Life.” This exhibition celebrated the creativity of those residents and the benefits of “making art” whether it be during an entire lifetime or as a second act career.
The presenting artists represented many different media including oil painting, pastels, fiber arts, wood carving, needle arts, and photography. Mother Nature was obviously a major inspiration given the fact that most of the pieces are reflections of her splendor. Beautifully prepared hors d’oeuvres and desserts from the Dietary Department under Chef John Biser enhanced the event.
An imposing “President Lincoln at the HQ of Gen. George McClellan at the Grove Farm in Sharpsburg,” an oil by Bill Davis drew in viewers. The variety of subject matter, media, and style reflects the richness found in the people of our Homewood Community. Each one had their unique story to tell as shared in the catalog that accompanied the exhibition. A reversible shower curtain entitled “Crowning Glory” sewn by Debbie Doub features about 75 bags from Crown Royal whiskies and drew chuckles and questions about who consumed all that libation.
Graphic artist Dr. Dianne Roman from Shepherdstown was the featured speaker. She energized the audience, sharing her own art journey starting at age four, and solicited guests’ memories of their first art encounters and definitions of art. One particularly well-received definition read, “For me, ‘Art’ is where one’s soul is nourished so deeply that one is unable to explain that feeling to others.”
