Ask SAM: Who pays for the Medicare ads on television?


Q: Can you please tell me who pays for all these constant ads on television we are bombarded with about Medicare? They seem to be on every channel every 10 minutes. R.E.

Answer: The company the commercial is for pays for the commercial. For example, if the ad is for Humana plan, Humana would pay for it.

Right now if prime time for such ads: Medicare open enrollment ends Dec. 7 for supplement plants. During open enrollment, Medicare recipients can change their supplement plans and insurance companies want to sell them a policy.

Q: During the COVID outbreak, community utilities started testing for COVID in the wastewater. Are Winston-Salem water utilities still doing this? If so, where are the results posted? P.B.

Answer: The COVID testing is continuing.

Gale Ketteler, the public information officer for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities, said that “WSFC Utilities continues to participate in this important public health program that monitors samples for COVID-19 and tracks all cases, including asymptomatic and non-reported.”

Volunteer tax preparers needed

The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation prepares free federal and state tax returns for taxpayers from Feb. 2 through April 12th. Volunteers are needed to provide support in scheduling and answering questions (client facilitators). Volunteers should be somewhat computer proficient, have good communication/interpersonal abilities and a willingness to learn.

This is an opportunity to help others, develop new skills and have a rewarding experience. Training is required for client facilitators, and you must pass a certification exam.

AARP Tax-Aide operates in a safe environment.

Central Library book sale

The Friends of the Central Library will hold its annual Big Book Sale Dec. 7-10 at the library, 660 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem. Admission is free.

The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 9 and 1-4 p.m. Dec. 10. On Dec. 10 items will be half price or $5 per bag; some exclusions apply.

A special preview sale will be from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 7. Admission is $25 for the preview sale.

Re-sellers will have to pay $25 each day for admission.

The sale will include books, DVDs, CDs and other media in good condition. There is also a large selection of children, teen, foreign language and historical books.

There are also vintage and first edition books.

Proceeds will benefit the library’s programs including the Children’s Summer Reading Program.
